Off-beat nu folk collaboration ERLAND & THE CARNIVAL play CRAWDADDY on the tour of their greatly acclaimed first album.

Specializing in off-kilter psych-pop reinventions of traditional Scottish and English folk songs, the trio produce a brilliantly weird mixture of the pastoral and the psychedelic on their self-titled debut, released in late January.

CARNIVAL features Simon Tong of The Verve and The Good The Bad & The Queen, and David Knock of Paul McCartney’s The Fireman. The group is headed up by Orkadian folk singer Erland Cooper.

“Debut album of the month” UNCUT 4/5

“Tip for 2010″ MOJO 4/5

“Stunning debut from Simon Tong’s nu folk trio” Q 4/

Erland And The Carnival Erland And The Carnival. Released 25th January 2010 on Full Time Hobby/Static Caravan:

Erland is Erland Cooper, guitarist, singer and former resident of remote Orkney. The Carnival are guitarist Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good, The Bad, The Queen) and drummer David Nock (Paul McCartney’s The Fireman). Together, they make a pastoral, psychedelic sound described by Tong as “Pentangle meets Ennio Morricone meets Love meets 13th Floor Elevators meets Joe Meek.” In other words: folk-tinged, psyched up, fuzzed-out brilliance.

Their self-titled debut album was recorded at Studio 13 (owned by Tong’s The Good, The Bad, The Queen band mate Damon Albarn), overdubbed in Simon’s attic and Erland’s shed and mixed at the garden studio owned by renowned producer Youth. Keys/harmonium player Andy Bruce, vocalist Georgia Sands and bassist Danny Wheeler also appear.
An early contender for debut album of 2010, this astonishing record finds the band plundering all kind of literary and musical sources. In the grand folk tradition, The Carnival see source material as something to be adapted, tinkered with, updated and blown apart.

Opening track Love Is A Killing Thing is a based on a traditional folk song collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams but updated with a new bridge and a chorus from a Seeger/MacColl song. The Derby Ram is another traditional song but greatly overhauled from its original subject matter. Originally about a giant fictional sheep, it now details a true (and truly modern) story about a recent suicide in which the jumper was filmed on mobile phones by the crowd on the ground. Elsewhere, William Blake (The Echoing Green) and Leonard Cohen (Disturbed In The Morning) provide the words.

Some history: Erland grew up on the Orkney Islands, where passing musicians and troubadors were a common sight. In his early teens, The Verve and Bert Jansch inspired him to swap the fiddle for the guitar. Later, having moved to London, Erland sang at Tong’s What The Folk club night in Portobello Road, where he was introduced to the former Verve man by the producer Youth. “It wasn’t a regular folk night where people are quiet and stroke their chin,” says Tong. “It was a more raucous affair where the acts as many as 15 a night had to quieten a noisy baying audience by being good. Erland definitely got people to shut up and listen.”

Resolving to form a band, Nock, Tong and Cooper took their name from Jackson C Frank’s My Name Is Carnival, a cover of which appears on the album. The band’s progression since has been fairly unorthodox: they’ve played gigs at miniature railway stations and their debut EP was individually re-recorded for each of its limited run, meaning no two copies are the same. All the while, they’ve been developing that bewitching sound.

“The Carnival sound developed dramatically over a year of playing and demo-ing,” says Tong. “Originally we were more acoustic but gradually have got darker and more electric and psychedelic. There is a 1930’s book called The Circus of Dr Lao where a wild, fantastical travelling circus comes to a fictional small American mid west town causing social chaos and upsetting the usual way of life of the towns inhabitants, then eventually it leaves and moves on with the town in tatters. I see that as a good metaphor for us as a band to aim for.”

French soundsmith KAT CROSS brings her live show “KAT CROSS & TALKATIVE” to CRAWDADDY on Wednesday 24th February. [CLICK HERE FOR MYSPACE]

The experimental artist is set to release her second album “Deja Vu” at the end of the month, the follow up to her debut “Work in Progress”.

Among her fans is trip-hop master Tricky, who selected one of her songs ‘Symphony for irony’ for his ‘Back to Mine’ compilation, where Kat was featured alongside musical icons Kate Bush, Gregory Isaac, The Cure, Dr John, and Chet Baker.

Kat Cross & Talkative is to include an experimental visual show entitled ‘La trajectoire des immobiles’, by visual performance artist Natasha Kail. Support will come from Dublin-based brother and sister duo Holy Roman Army.

Classically trained Kat Cross transcends many genres of music with her unique style. Though fed on a diet of classical music, Kat delves into the world of rock, punk, pop, before making a detour into more experimental music.

For Kat Cross, music is like craftwork, where sounds replace materials, and show their infinite possibilities for assembly. Kat Cross is where electro and acoustic meet, where classical and pop join hands. Her musical diversity brought her to the attention of platinum selling ‘Tricky’, who upon discovering Kat, selected one of her songs ‘Symphony for irony’ for his ‘Back to Mine’ compilation where Kat was featured alongside music icons - , Kate Bush, Gregory Isaac, The Cure, Dr John and Chet Baker.

With a critically acclaimed first album ‘Work In Progress’ under her belt (distributed by Believe Digital), her second album ‘Déjà Vu’ is set for release in spring 2010. During recording, Kat made some interesting connections. The songs are ethereal, ambient, emotional and defined. When performed live, these compositions find some intriguing alterations and a sometimes radical new direction to the originals, which highlight Kat’s fearlessness of risk.

The live show featuring her band ‘Kat Cross and Talkative’ also includes an experimental visual show called ‘La trajectoire des immobiles’.

HOLY ROMAN ARMY
Biography

The Holy Roman Army are Chris and Laura Coffey, a brother and sister from Co. Carlow who offer up their own distinctive brand of loop-laden electronica.

Their self-released debut album ‘How The Light Gets In’ is a distillation of their idiosyncratic musical tastes, fusing glitchy laptop beats with melodic sensibilities and referencing acts as diverse as DJ Shadow, The Notwist, Portishead and Mum. The album was released to considerable critical acclaim in June 2009 and was listed as one of the Irish albums of the year in several prominent publications and blogs including Metro, Hot Press, Nialler9.com and was the Irish album of the year in the Limerick Leader.

The Holy Roman Army have played gigs in numerous venues across Dublin and further afield since their debut performance in January 2008, with highlights including appearances at the Future Days and Castlepalooza festivals. They have recorded live sessions for Today FM and 2FM over the last few months. The band’s live show has evolved from their original two-person line-up to incorporate George Guilfoyle on basss, Dennis Cassidy on drums and Andrew Christofides on trumpet. The live show also features visuals gleaned from their own Super-8 footage and photography.

Warm up this cold February Monday with some hot Jazz at The Button Factory with the second residency of the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, a 17 piece band formed in 2007. Then called the Dublin City Big Band, the group was formed by Ciaran Wilde and Raymond Martin to showcase to children in the Ballymun Wind project the full experience of a Big Band sound to inspire their own musical projects. After this, they went on to play the Electric Picnic 2008 at the IMC World Music Stage, the reaction for which has spurred this residency into being, which is good news for Dubliners who want to have a great time dancing whilst appreciating fine musicianship. The orchestra features 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, Piano, bass, drums and guitar all from professional full-time musicians who represent some of the finest in Europe including the likes of Sketches of Now guitarist Hugh Buckley, leader of his piano trio, Phil Ware and Nick Roth, band leader of Klezmer group Yurodny. All musicians are prominent in both Irish and international scenes. As individual session musicians members have performed and recorded with the likes of U2, Oasis, Van Morrison, The Symphony and Concert Orchestra, Movie soundtracks and top visiting artists like Dave Liebman, John Faddis, and Bobby Watson. On Monday night in the Button Factory you can here the band play music the musicians love to play themselves with arrangements by our own Irish arrangers Brian Byrne, David O’Rourke, Cormac McCarthy as well as USA arrangers, Thad Jones, Count Bassey as well as Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, and Oliver Nelson.

The uniqueness of Líadan lies in the deeply traditional essence of their music and in each band member’s ability to shine both instrumentally and vocally. Líadan’s stage presence exudes a group personality that is both vibrant and engaging. Their tune playing features striking string and reed rhythms and accompaniments, while always keeping the melody central to their arrangements. Coupled with that, the members are highly talented vocalists, displaying an astounding ability to move audiences with their settings of traditional and sean-nós songs in the Gaelic and English language, using acapella, harmonies and instrumental arrangements.

Líadan’s distinctive and innovative sound has won them such prestigious awards as ‘Best Live Band’ at the Lorient Interceltic Festival, 2005, and ‘Best Vocal Group’ at the International Pan Celtic Festival, 2005. Following the huge success of their debut album, which was launched in September 2006, the band was invited to tour America and Japan with The Chieftains. They have also played at prestigious venues and festivals such as Carnegie Hall, Áras an Uachtaráin, Milwaukee Irish Festival, Icons Festival, The World Fleadh, Richmond Folk Festival, EBU Folk Festival and the North Texas Irish Festival. Líadan performed on Ireland’s favourite chat show, The Late Late Show in October 2007 and they were also featured on Up for the Match earlier that year (both performances can be seen on www.myspace.com/liadanmusic).

Líadan’s musical and vocal prowess, their ability to move effortlessly between Irish and English language song, and the traditionally rooted core of their music makes them a force to be reckoned within the Irish traditional band stakes.

Electronic producer THE FIELD will play a TRIPOD club show on Friday 22nd January 2010.

Swedish trance alchemist Axel Willner and his band are touring The Field’s latest album “Yesterday & Today”, the follow up to 2007’s universally acclaimed “From Here We Go Sublime”.

The show will feature live visuals and live backing from percussionist Dan Enqvist and multi-instrumentalist Andreas Söderstrom.

“If Willner doesn’t hit at least some of your pleasure centers, well, forget your ears– your nerve endings might actually be dead.” PITCHFORK

THE FIELD has had a remarkable past year touring the globe with his band performing a slew of key summer festivals slots that included Oye, Bestival and Creamfields, and currently touring across Europe. His full length album “YESTERDAY & TODAY” has grown to become one of 2009’s most celebrated releases,

THE FIELD is Axel Willner, and his last album, Here We Go Sublime, was one of the most acclaimed releases of 2007, receiving a 9.0 on Pitchfork and universal praise. The BBC called it “one of those rare albums that makes you wonder how you ever got by without it.” The album is the soundtrack to the spit-shined airport of your dreams - faceless, futuristic, and fuzzy. You could dance to it, sleep to it, or daydream to it: just a versatile little album.

Now, Willner’s label, KOMPAKT, moves forward with his sophomore full length, Yesterday And Today. On the new album, Willner expands his palette, continuing the oblique sampling strategy of From Here We Go Sublime while building up the rhythmic architecture; the album features a group of different musicians and on the title track, Willner collaborates for the first time with BATTLES drummer John Stanier.
Since startling the world with From Here We Go Sublime, Willner has been much in demand as a remixer, with tracks from THOM YORKE to BATTLES to MAPS raising his profile, so that now legions are gathered, in that spit-shined terminal, waiting for their blissed-out departure.

Ray Collins’ Hot Club : the hotest club in town!
Imagine a band which could play to perfection a mixture of 40’s and 50′ s Jump-blues, swing, jive and of rock ‘n roll with authenticity and an overflowing energy while developing their own style and composing some solid songs. A band which could set a ballroom on fire with only the first bars of a brass section. Imagine nine guys ready to party and make you spend an unforgettable evening and which for that will give all that they have! You think that kind of band has never existed and will never exist neither in Europe, neither in States nor in any area of the world. But I can swear to you that this band really exist and that they just released their third album “Tohuwabohu” for Crazy Love Records. This group is The “Ray Collins’ Hot Club”, a german bunch of wild guys which signed their first album in 2001 -“Shaking That Boogie”- and which since became a reference.
Some bands are good in studio and disappointing on stage. Some others are just the opposite; they are great entertainers but their albums are flat and without any “fever” or “guts” whatever you call it. In this case, we are dealing with this rare species of band who are at the same time achieved showmen and which sign original albums with no fillers or tracks to be thrown away.

A Show not to be missed!
